Boulder opal gets it's name from the way and where it is found. A hard brownish matrix rock called ironstone is the host for thin layers of precious opal. Big chunks of ironstone (boulders) are cut apart to reveal these thin veins of Precious Opal or veins may run through the ironstone. This is called matrix opal. Boulder Opal was first discovered in Queensland, Australia in 1869.
